About SNH

Really, our role couldn't be clearer. We work with Scotland's people to care for our natural heritage- it's a global asset, and provides resources that are vital for life. We promote its care and improvement, its responsible enjoyment, its greater understanding and appreciation, and its sustainable use, now and for future generations.

We also foster a greater understanding and appreciation of what the natural heritage provides us with. To achieve this, we work in partnership with a wide range of people and try new and innovative ways of working.

Scotland's natural heritage is one of the things that sets us apart as nation. So actually we take on a multitude of complex and significant responsibilities - from caring for the natural world to enriching people's lives, promoting sustainable use to new and innovative ways of working.

We've been around since the Natural Heritage (Scotland) Act 1991, we're funded by the Scottish Government and Scottish ministers appoint our chairman and members of our board. Through this board, we answer to the responsible minister and so to the Scottish Parliament.

Scottish Natural Heritage wholeheartedly supports the principles of the management of Equality and Diversity in employment and to promoting and mainstreaming equality and diversity in all our activities and functions. SNH opposes all forms of unlawful or unfair discrimination.

We will seek to take every possible step to ensure that individuals are treated equally and fairly and those decisions on recruitment, selection, training, promotion and career development are based on objective and job-related criteria. We will strive to continually improve our ability to meet the needs of all sectors of the community and to maintaining a culture and philosophy, which recognises and rewards individual achievement and merit regardless of age, colour, disability, ethnic or national origin, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, religion or a deeply held philosophical belief.
